'Prayers' focuses on Taiwan's unique temple culture, exploring how ancient rituals are seamlessly woven into the modern everyday. A central theme of this series is to capture the diverse hierarchy of the divine amidst the annual Mazu Pilgrimage. Subjects range from the formidable Guan Jiang Shou 官將首 (divine guardians) and the Civil Officers 家將文官 (messengers responsible for receiving and transmitting divine orders) to the towering Daxian Wengzai 大仙尪仔 (Giant God Generals). Serving as the deity's entourage, these figures collectively commemorate the perilous journey early settlers undertook to arrive in Taiwan.
Collectively, these images illustrate how faith serves as a powerful foundation for collective identity. Moving between sacred rites and bustling streets, this project is a visual testament to the resilience of Taiwanese piety and the enduring bond between the people and their land.
